Dave Holland, storico contrabbassista jazz, si è presentato al pubblico di Roma con un quintetto fenomenale. Robin Eubanks al trombone, Chris Potter ai sax, Steve Nelson al vibrafono e Nate Smith alla batteria. Due ore filate di jazz da brivido. Holland e l'incredibile giovane batterista Smith, mantenevano un tappeto ritmico molto serrato su cui gli altri musicisti eseguivano dei lunghi assoli. Robin Eubanks esplosivo con il suo trombone, Chris Potter si è alternato fra Tenore e Soprano e si è dimostrato un grande virtuoso. Steve Nelson un grande, al concerto ci sono andato praticamente più per lui che per Holland, il suo look e le sue movenze buffe lo fanno sembrare appena uscito da un telefilm poliziesco americano degli anni '70. Ho il suo doppio live set pubblicato per la Red Records (Cd venduti separatemente), in cui ci suona fra gli altri Bobby Watson. Un godimento per l'orecchio le sue volate su vibrafono e marimba. Sono rimasto veramente impressionato dal batterista Nate Smith, giovanissimo, portava dei ritmi incredibili, per certi versi mi ha ricordato Omar Akim quando lo vidi con Sting. E poi Dave Holland, il grande contrabbassista che Miles Davis scoprì in un piccolo jazz club in Inghilterra ha suonato con la sua solita classe lasciando grandi spazi ai suoi musicisti.
